Assessing the viability of financial incentives for sustainable housing initiatives

Ascari was commissioned by Beacon Pathway to explore potential financial incentives that could be offered by local government bodies to encourage sustainable housing and their viability. The work focused on the potential ways that government can use financial incentives to encourage the uptake of sustainable housing initiatives, how to achieve uptake in practice, the legal framework that surrounds financial incentives, and the issues that councils may encounter.
The paper also produced ‘key learnings’ drawn from other financial incentives systems already in place around New Zealand, which are intended to inform councils that are considering how, or whether, to put in place a financial incentive system for sustainable housing initiatives.
