Rural economies in the Auckland region - Examining the transformational potential

Auckland Regional Council (October 2008)

This research paper reflects the first holistic examination of rural economic activity in the Auckland region. The paper is structured around key topical areas including the rural economy’s nature, its drivers, and its linkages with the urban economy. The diversity of economic activity that can be found in rural areas, the increasing significance of consumption based activities, the changing nature of agriculture, the potential for an enhanced tourist offer, and the need to do further research were major points noted. The paper also considered rural innovation prospects as well as the benefits that improved broadband infrastructure and services may provide.

Ascari developed this paper from an examination of existing research and data, as well as from findings gleaned in face-to-face interviews with rural stakeholders.
