Current state analysis: Communications and Marketing group

Auckland City Council (January-February 2008)

Ascari was commissioned to undertake a current state analysis of Auckland City Council’s Communications and Marketing group. This involved working closely with the group’s lead team to identify and assess key initiatives, budget, issues, challenges and opportunities.

Ascari carried out a detailed analysis of the group’s core activities. This included identifying tasks, drivers, issues, risks and opportunities. Ascari also developed a model for assessing the resourcing requirements for each activity, including staffing, time and budget.

The final current state report contributed to a wider review of the group, undertaken by a separate consultant.

Briefing materials: Overview of arts, community and recreation activities

Auckland City Council (December 2007)

Ascari produced reference folders for the chairs and co-chairs of the Community Services, and the Arts, Culture and Recreation Council committees. They produced detailed activity and asset sheets relevant to these committees (for example parks, recreation, libraries). Each activity sheet was researched and written to provide succinct, accessible reference information. This included why the Council is involved, strategic context, cost (including value for money and efficiencies), public participation, policy objectives, key issues, work programme and outputs, political decisions required, key stakeholders and legislative requirements. These folders made a significant contribution to the post-election briefing programme for new councillors and as a resource for the Council’s senior executive staff.

Literature review: Local government strategic planning

Department of Internal Affairs (September 2007)

Ascari carried out a review of collaborative local and metropolitan governance models. The review focussed on how places similar to Auckland are managed and operated, and the parallels that can be drawn. It considered how other sectors collaborate with similar representatives and/or service delivery mechanisms to local government. It gave examples of collaborative strategic planning that accommodates the different mandates and accountabilities of the various organisations involved.

Literature review: Implications of world heritage status for indigenous groups

Auckland City Council (November 2007)

Achieving World Heritage status for Auckland’s volcanic landscape is a key priority for the Council’s Volcanic Landscapes Programme. Effectively managing the wide stakeholder interests regarding the aesthetic, conservational and functional roles and features of the field is therefore essential. A key consideration is that the volcanic field contains key cultural sites for local iwi. This literature review investigated the opportunities and constraints faced by indigenous groups where world heritage status for a cultural or natural feature has been achieved. It also explored what achieving heritage status may mean for local iwi.
